In my last article I shared a challenge that I’m embracing and asked you to consider embracing it too. I have a question, did you? Did you embrace the challenge and make time or schedule time to complete or create a project – and did you set a ‘finish by date’? If you did, give yourself a HUGE round of applause and picture me clapping right along with you!

OK, that’s not me, but he is clapping!

If you didn’t, why not? Did you get caught up in your head and your opinions? Here’s something interesting I’ve learned about opinions, a lot of the time, they actually serve to hold us back and keep us exactly where we are. You probably wonder how. Opinions are actually judgments. And when we stand in judgment, we often stand back. Standing back prevents any forward motion, it prevents learning and it prevents new opportunities. When you stand back and judge a situation or individual, you usually find them lacking in someway. And so, you vote ‘no’.

And when you vote ‘no’ to new opportunities or new learning, you lose! I don’t want you to lose! I want you to live your biggest, most awesome, happy and successful life! To do that, you need to embrace change, embrace opportunity and sometimes, embrace challenge.

Now keep me posted so I can keep supporting you and I’ll keep you posted on my project so you can keep supporting me! I have 10 more days to write 9 blog posts and then it’s sabbatical time. Time to shut the office down for both June and July and get busy completing the updates to my coaching program. So far, I’m right on schedule!

If you’re new to the challenge, go ahead and post your project and info below, I love hearing what you’re doing and that way, I can chat with ya and support ya!

Bonus Lifestyle Feng Shui Tip -

To help you with your challenge, create support in your kitchen! Why the kitchen? Your kitchen is the heart of your home, this is where you nurture and care for yourself. If you aren’t taking the time to eat properly it could be an indication of a lack of belief in yourself or a lack of commitment to yourself. You just don’t think you’re worth the time it would take to make and eat meals that nourish your body while sustaining your soul. Did I just say ‘sustaining your soul’? YES! How you treat yourself ripples into the depths of who you are and co-creates the reality you experience in all aspects of your life.

So, if things aren’t going the way you want them to, set aside some time to clear clutter in your kitchen, buy some fresh flowers for the table, go to the grocery store and then prepare at least 3 meals a week for yourself. And eat them sitting down in front of your lovely new flowers!

My biz is constantly evolving. With every change in my life, experiences and perspective, my biz changes along with me. It’s a wonderful thing! This way I’m always doing work that aligns with who I am and what’s important to me – I NEVER feel trapped or limited by my options because my options are limitless just as I am! (At least most of the time!)

What about you? Are your options limitless or, like many, do you feel your options are limited? Limited by your circumstances, limited by your current job, limited by your education or lack of education, or maybe, limited by your perspective?

It’s not really comfortable to think about, is it?

Well, here’s the thing, all of us truly are limitless, the only thing that limits us is our perspective – our thoughts or lack of belief in ourselves.

Let me give you an example. Last week I was in California attending what turned out to be the most awesome conference I’ve ever been to, and in the middle of one of the group exercises I had a full blown panic attack! It’s true, there I am a PROFESSIONAL, doing what should have been a simple presentation and instead I crashed and burned – and I must say spectacularly! (I like to make an impression, but this was NOT the impression I had in mind!)

What’s that got to do with limits? Everything. As my fellow group members were taking turns giving their presentations I found myself becoming more and more uncomfortable…those tiny, nagging, negative thoughts that we all have crept up on me and began chipping away at my confidence. I found myself thinking, “I’m not prepared, my notes aren’t ready, I’m not as good as she is, or he is…etc.” My own thoughts were sabotaging me and limiting my ability to step fully into the exercise and do my best.

Think about that for a minute, my thoughts were so disempowering my body panicked, it had no other option because I had no positive thoughts. My THOUGHTS and FEARS CREATED the LIMITATION!

What do you do when all you can think about are negative, self-limiting thoughts? You get it together and make a change. Or you can choose to believe your ‘story’ and embrace the excuses your thoughts give you to stay small.

Where’s the advantage in staying small? When we block ourselves and our opportunities with our thoughts and our fears, WE LIMIT OURSELVES, we sabotage our future.

Don’t let your fears today block your opportunities tomorrow.

Want to know what I did?

I decided to change the story.

I took my lunch to my room, sat down and began working on the exercise I was doing when the panic attack struck. When I finished the exercise, I found several of my group-mates and made my presentation. I could have taken the afternoon off, licked my wounds and hoped it would be easier the next time – which would simply have empowered my fear. Or I could do what I did, which is to get right back up on the horse again. I took control of the situation, control of my thoughts and shifted my perspective. I decided that I was not only good enough, I was AWESOME!

And you are too – you just have to believe it and believe in yourself!

To help you in the process, I’m sharing a challenge I recently had put to me, and I’m wondering if you’d like to take the challenge with me. Are you game? Want to give it a try? Click the video below and find out all about it.

Color is one of my favorite Lifestyle Feng Shui™ tools. I can use it to create impact, to soften a space and to enhance and balance a space. Color can be subtle or strong, light or dark, there is no limit to color and the ways you can use it to enhance your living spaces.

Color is a powerful multi-sensory tool. It affects us on many levels; how we see it, how we feel it and how it alters the space it’s in. Every color has an energetic association and each of us are drawn to different colors for a variety of reasons.

Color can transform the atmosphere of a home, changing the way you feel about the spaces in which you live. Color has an undeniable emotional ability to affect us.

Are you afraid of color? Do you tend to stay safe with white, beige and taupe tones? Not sure? See if the following statements sound familiar-

Color will make a room look smaller.

Color will make the room too dark.

Color makes it hard to sell a home. (Not true and if it were, it would only matter if you were trying to sell your home)

You’re not sure if color will work.

You don’t want to make a mistake.

You’re afraid you’ll get tired of it.

If you answered ‘yes’ to 3 or more statements, you are definitely afraid of color. The solution? After reading this article, go to your local paint store and buy a small can of paint in one of your favorite colors. Bring it home, take a deep breath and paint something!

Need a place to start? Some great places to use accent colors, or our first attempt at stronger color than we’re used to are:

The inside of a closet or cupboard.

A small bathroom (yes small, color looks smashing in small spaces!)

The door into your home from the garage – garage side.

A hallway

The front door – this is a fantastic place to incorporate your favorite color!

Treat yourself to a pleasant surprise. When you paint one of the areas listed above, you’ll feel like you’ve given yourself a special treat. And it will look as though someone took extra care to create a spot of beauty in a small space.

I believe that almost all of us thrive when surrounded with color. Think about the world outside your door, the colors of nature and the amazing tapestry each season brings. If it works outside, it’ll work inside.

Color is more than an expression of style. Color feeds our mind, our spirit and our experience of space. Norwegian color theorist Grete Smedal states that, “colour should involve and engage people if it is to increase the quality of life.” Color heightens our awareness; it energizes us and enriches us.

Let’s face it; life is too short for beige!

How do you choose color? With your heart, not your head. When you choose color with your head, you focus on why colors won’t work and then often talk yourself into choosing a color that you deem safe. When you choose color with your heart, you choose color that resonates with who you are, at the core of your being. You choose color that feels good. And when you choose color that feels good you create a space that embraces you with comfort, a space that embraces you with style, a space that embraces…you!

Afraid you might make a mistake? There’s nothing to be afraid of, it’s is just paint. If you find you don’t like it, repaint! Choose a new color and begin again. Sometimes it takes a few tries to capture the color that not only feels good but looks good in your home, don’t give up. Keep trying till you get it; believe me you’ll be happy you did.

To help with the process, I found several paint companies that have great color learning tools. From color visualizers, to color theory there is lots of info that can help you select a perfect color. Keep in mind, the colors suggested are the beginning of the process, you may find that you prefer darker or lighter shades than those represented – think of it as a place to begin.

Several years ago I read a book called, “The Secret.” The premise of the book is about living a life based on the Law of Attraction.

I imagine you’re wondering what the Law of Attraction has to do with marketing or your business…well…if you want to experience great success and abundance I believe the Law of Attraction has everything to do with your marketing strategy.

Let me tell you why.

We are what we believe we are.

As an entrepreneur it is important to spend time determining exactly who your client is, what you offer and what you want to achieve. Once you’ve determined this, and I mean really thought it out and defined it, you can and should imagine yourself successful.

Create a vision of yourself successfully attracting LOTS of clients. Literally imagine yourself interacting with them. Envision abundance in all its forms flowing easily and naturally to you, and envision your life from this place of abundance. This last part is really important…when you can envision it in your mind, its time to take it a step further. Imagine it as though it is not only real, but it is real RIGHT NOW! Begin to ‘act as if.’

“There is no limit to what this law can do for you;
dare to believe in your own ideal;
think of the ideal as an already accomplished fact.”

                                                             Charles Haanel

I know, if being successful was as easy as thinking it wouldn’t everyone be successful? In a word, no. And here’s why. While we may think about being successful we don’t really believe its something we can achieve – at least not at the level we think we want.

The limits and blocks we experience are truly limits and blocks we chose to believe in, in our mind, before we experienced them.

Sound hard to believe?

Let me give you an example. Let’s say you’ve made a presentation to a client and all you have to do now is wait for them to contact you to place an order. While you wait do you usually begin to worry about whether or not the order will come in? Do you worry about how hard it is to get an order? Do you worry if you have the staff to accommodate the order?

When we think like this, with a focus on what isn’t working or what we don’t want, we actually energize and enlarge the experience of what we don’t want…so much so, it is often what we actually experience!

To change this, shift your focus. Instead of focusing on what might not happen focus instead on what it will be like as the orders come in. Focus on the feeling of satisfaction, the excitement and abundance that are yours as the orders roll in. Actually create a new reality!

“Whether you think you can or think you can’t either way you are right.”

                                                                                                           Henry Ford

Sounds easy doesn’t it? It is!

It’s so easy to understand this concept we often fail to incorporate it into our lives.

How can you begin to live a life based on the principles of attraction? I have some ideas you can use to begin to change your focus RIGHT NOW!

3 Lifestyle Soul-utions That Can Change Your Life

Take a look at your work environment. Does it support a steady flow of abundance? When you’re in this space do you feel abundant? Or, if you’re being honest, do you have an outdated computer, an old printer and a makeshift desk? In feng shui we believe we must create the change we desire. It’s important to surround yourself with the energy, the reality you desire. So take a good look at your office and see what changes you can make so it glows with abundance.

Get proactive. What work do you have outstanding right now? What’s stopping you from completing it? Get organized, get focused and get busy! Contact that customer, write that outline, keep your eye and energy on the big picture. Don’t get sidetracked and let your day, email, social networks and other peoples agenda take charge of you. You are the master of your time and your thoughts. Are they serving you?

Everyday for the next 30 days begin your workday by writing down everything that you LOVE about what you do. Include all positive aspects of your job. (It’s OK if you repeat things a little bit.) Dont ‘write or think about anything that isn’t going the way you want it, write only about what’s working and what it will be like as it continues to work and grow for you.

These 3 strategic Lifestyle Soul-utions are incredibly powerful. When your environment supports the change you desire you are supported. When you focus on the big picture and take steps to create it, the Universe will take steps to assist you. And when you write out your intentions regularly they become more than intentions, they become reality.

How do you know if you’re on the right path? The same way you know you’re not. You feel it. Your spirit is speaking to you everyday, all the time, and it’s your job to hear it. Pay attention to what makes you feel energized, connected and inspired.

Take control of your thoughts and change your reality – today!

Act as if…

What kind of friend are you?

During a recent trip to Charleston, I was reading a local neighborhood paper and found a fabulous article about friendship and the many faces it wears. The article got me thinking about friends, what they are and what they mean to us. So I thought I’d share my thoughts with you!

On the surface, I think most of us think of friends as people we can count on. People that share our interests, our values and have a fierce sense of loyalty and commitment. The truth is, not all friends are like that. And they shouldn’t be.

Some friends are what I would call lifestyle friends. These are people that are great fun to socialize with, you might meet them for a round of golf, a jog around the park or a monthly lunch date. They are often regulars in our lives. And while conversation can be lively, it tends to float on the surface, light and entertaining.

Another type of friend is the lollipop. The lollipop is really interesting at first, but after a few good ‘licks’ you realize that there isn’t as much there as you thought there was. These are often folks you meet when you go to an event or conference or attend a class. These friends come and go throughout our lives but they never stay, we just don’t have enough in common to sustain a relationship.

Then there are drama queens. For these folks everyday is a day filled with challenge, frustration and something to complain about. A drama queen rarely wants to hear about you or you or your life, their entire focus is on talking about themselves. While the conversation can be lively, ultimately you are left feeling a little used and a little tired.

Crazy makers thrive on conflict and intrigue. Crazy makers and drama queens share similar traits, but the crazy maker goes beyond talking about unpleasant experiences – the crazy maker actually creates them. And the stories and situations they create always reflect badly on others. This is the person that loves to gossip – about everyone, no one is safe. And if there isn’t a good story or rumor to share, crazy makers will simply make one up.

The final friend is a staple, the bread to your butter. The kindred spirit is a tried and true friend – the best you can find. Solid, substantial and reliable. Once you’ve gotten to know the kindred spirit you’ll find you have a friend for life. The kindred spirit can be counted on to help when you need it. They are the friends that pick up wherever you left off. If you haven’t seen or spoken to one another for years, you are able to fall right back into the groove seamlessly and easily. Kindred spirits are the friends we all want and the friend we all want to be.

If you’re like most folks, you’ve probably been every type of friend at one point or another, from kindred spirit to drama queen and lifestyle friend, you’ve dabbled in them all. And in the process, you’ve gained a deeper understanding of who you are and who you want to be – the real question isn’t really what type of friend you are, but rather what type of friend do you want to be?

Do you deny your feelings?

When someone asks you how you are feeling, or you ask them how they are feeling the responses and stories that are often told are stories of drama, frustration, angst and woe. These are usually stories or events that are long over and resolved, in our retelling of them, as if they are current, we actually re-energize them and bring them back to life. In fact, because our experiences are shaped through the law of attraction, our constant focus on negative past events ensures that the seeds of our future will be sown with the same energy we’ve experienced in our past.

We make up our stories based on our past experiences and the experiences of influential people in our lives, such as our parents, our teachers and our friends. In each and every moment we are busy attributing past experiences and past stories to new events.

Energy in and of itself isn’t good or bad, it simply is. How we interpret our experiences and the energy around us creates what we perceive as good or bad. Energy is a vibration, and you vibrate in alignment with what you believe. When your words and vibration are out of alignment with one another vibration wins and vibration, or your energy, will attract like energy to itself – just like a magnet.

How do you know if your vibration is in alignment? You can tell by how you feel. When you feel frustrated, angry, resentful, insecure or helpless your feelings are letting you know that your energy is out of alignment. Your body never lies. We are either in alignment or we are out of alignment. Learning to use your feelings as guideposts can help you attract new meaning, new stories, and new energy to your experiences. And when you do that you have the power to literally shift your life story.

Lifestyle Feng Shui-lutions for Realignment

Notice what you’re feeling. For example you may notice that your breathing is deep and calm, or that you have a smile on your face, or your back may hurt or maybe you discover that you’re scowling. Don’t judge how you feel, simply be aware. And in this place of awareness give yourself permission to experience whatever you are feeling. Remember, energy is a vibration it isn’t good or bad, it simply is.

As you embrace what you are feeling, begin to breathe. Breathe into that part of your body or emotions that are off-balance. Breathe deeply and slowly. Feel tension or discomfort dissipating with each breath.

If your feelings have been feelings of discomfort and dissatisfaction, ask yourself what you would prefer to feel. And then for 30-60 seconds imagine something, someone or a situation that evokes the feeling you’d like to create.

As your feelings begin to shift breathe deeply, allow your breath to realign your vibration.

Make up a belief or story that supports how you want to feel and focus your thoughts, energy and actions on your new belief. The more you focus on it, the more real it will become. In this world of attraction, we get what we focus on – changing your story is a powerful way to realign, redirect and re-energize your life experiences. And when your story changes today, you sow the seeds for a new story tomorrow.

Let your feelings be your guide to a better tomorrow!

Have you ever had someone say something so hurtful and untrue that you literally felt sick to your stomach?

What did you do?

I recently had the opportunity to experience this and I have to admit I was stunned speechless – for those of you that know me – I’m not usually speechless! LOL!

I was in turn, surprised, shocked, hurt, and finally confused. How could someone say something so very wrong and believe that they were so very right? I guess we do this all the time. In the passion of our beliefs we sometimes invalidate others and assume our viewpoint is the only viewpoint, or perhaps the only right viewpoint.

Here’s the thing, I think there is always more than one point of view. There is always more to the story than we are aware of – and to fully appreciate any situation, especially one in which we were not directly involved – we really need the whole story.

And, even when we have the whole story, the best thing might be to stand in a place of non-judgment, extending compassion and understanding – exactly what we would want if we were in the same situation.

So, from all of me to all of you, I stand in my light for you. My deepest joy and happiness comes from being able to help you improve the quality of your life, whether the focus is on balance in your home, balance between work and life or just life itself. I am grateful to be here. It is an honor and I am deeply appreciative. Thank you.

This situation got me thinking about balance. Is balance something we can truly achieve or are we destined to be blown about by the whims and shifting energy of others?

In reality, it’s probably a bit of both. We seek balance in our own lives, but the lives and experiences of others, especially those close to us are bound to affect us. So how do you manage it all?

Recently I wrote a blog post titled, ‘What’s in a Name.’ And the content of that post has stayed on my mind, so much so, that I decided to explore it further and I created a video for you!

If you’re a new biz owner or entrepreneur I bet you’ve spent hours, weeks, maybe even months trying to determine the perfect business name.

The name that captures who you are and what you do. A name that’s pithy and smart, clever, exciting and a little bit intriguing.

You’ve also spent time working on your colors, your logo and your brand concept.

In fact you might still be working on all of these things.

And if you are, you’re working on them because you think that in order to start or have a successful biz you have to have these things.

Well you know what, I don’t think you do and here’s why. The single component that is in your biz no matter what your biz name is, no matter what you do, the single component that will never change – is you.

My suggestion is that you start your biz with your name…begin with where you are, Allow yourself the freedom and the flexiblty to evolve and transition from where you are today to where you may be tomorrow!

In the process you’ll gain clarity and you’ll gain an awareness of exactly what you’re biz is and how you want to do it. In that space the development of a biz name, the development of a logo, the development of a brand happens much much easier. In fact, it’s almost spontaneous.

You may be thinking, ‘But wait – if I start in one place and then shift to another won’t that hurt my biz?’

Could it hurt your biz? It could slow it down – if you just drop all the connections and don’t do the work necessary to maintain your biz standing.

Does it have to hurt your biz? Absolutely not!

I know this for a fact because I’ve personally changed my biz name in the past and in some ways, I’m doing it again. I am literally doing what I’m recommending to you and truthfully, I wish 20 years ago someone would have suggested this to me.

Consistency is the power of a brand, it’s what makes it recognizable. Whether it’s the colors, the logo or the message, a brand creates an instant impression. The key to keeping it viable is to allow it to evolve and shift with you. That may mean changing the colors, or the fonts or in some cases even the message. What you don’t want to do is to change everything.

If you allow your brand to define you, in time, you’ll become trapped, locked into the way it’s always been – even though this no longer serves you. And this is where creating your biz around your name becomes so powerful. You inform your brand. When you’re the unchanging component you have a tremendous amount of flexiblity and space to grow.

Longevity and viability require flexibility.

I was reading Danielle La Porte’s book, The Firestarter Session again – yes – I’ve already read it once and it was so GOOD that I’m actually reading it again!

In it she asks the following questions -

When do you feel like a rockstar?

What do you want to be known for?

The thing I LOVE about these questions is that if you answer, and I mean truly answer them, from your heart and soul you will have what you need to live a life a on purpose.

What’s a life on purpose? A life on purpose is a life in alignment with your authentic self, a life full of passion and clarity.

“Passion will always move you in the direction of your authentic self.”
Danielle La Porte

How do you know if you’re following your passion? Passion is compelling, it feel natural – if you aren’t following your passion your outcome, the level of energy and juice you bring and receive, drops down to about 75%. You’ll still do good, maybe even really good – but – it won’t feel great.

Following your passion feels great. It’s not always easy. It still takes focus, commitment and dedication. But passion pulls you forward, toward your authentic self. And embracing your authentic self feels exciting, interesting and natural. Ultimately it feels GREAT!

Passion is easy because you’re doing what comes naturally. Passion is less stressful, you do it because you want to not because you’re obligated.

Passion is self motivating – it’s hard to resist what we’re naturally drawn to. And we tend to be naturally drawn to what we’re good at. Our strengths! As Stephen Covey, author of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People states, “Get better at what you’re good at.”

Don’t waste your time focusing on what you aren’t good at, spend your time focusing on getting better at what you’re good at, go for mastery!

Shift gears, really take a look at what you’re doing. If it doesn’t light you up, energize and excite you…what does?

Then do it!

If you’re an entrepreneur or just starting a business one of the questions you may find yourself asking is whether or not you need a business name and logo and if you do, how do you get one?

This is one of what I call a ‘show stopping question’. ‘Show stopping’ is a term I use for questions we ask ourselves that have no single clearly defined answer and this lack of clarity often stops us from moving forward. Coming up with a business name and logo doesn’t have to be something you do at the beginning of a new business. In fact, the search for a perfect business name and logo can trap us in an endless struggle. And because we aren’t sure about our name and we’re afraid to get it wrong we wind up stuck – forever adrift without the right identity!

Sound familiar?

While there are many points of view on this, I’m going to share what I did and what I’m doing now. And I’ll give you a hint, what I did is what many of you may think you should do – and for me, what I did wasn’t the best solution. In fact, it cost me more money and time in the long run. And who likes to waste time or money? What I’m doing now is what the many of the most successful entrepreneurs do and it’s what I think you should consider too.

Determining a business name isn’t easy, often we try to develop a name that’s in alignment with our services, or what we feel we provide to our clients. For example, when I first began my design business, I named it Details. I thought the name was perfect for me! It captured my laser focus and attention to detail, both important when you’re helping someone decorate their home. But then, after a few years I began to incorporate other services into my business and suddenly, Details felt like it wasn’t capturing the energy of what my work was, it wasn’t embracing the whole picture. I struggled trying to find a way to define what I do so that my business name would work. It didn’t work and the struggle simply caused a lack of clarity for my customers, they could sense the imbalance.

So, guess what I did? I changed my business name!

I changed it to Harmony Life Design® and this was perfect! Not only did my new name capture the energy of the way I did design work, but it also captured the vibrant energy of our living spaces and in that I felt it embraced the service I offered.

Guess what happened?

You guessed it, I continued to grow and learn and I continued to evolve my services and then, one day, the name Harmony Life Design® wasn’t quite right anymore.

BUT this time, I decided to do something different. Instead of changing my business name, I decided to keep Harmony Life Design® and let it be the name of a fabulous product I offer and I’m changing my business and website to my name. Instead of naming my business after my services or method of delivery, I now name my business after me. This way as my BIG PICTURE continues to evolve and grow, my business can continue to grow and evolve with me. I am not limited by the name of my company!

And as I develop new products or services, I’ll simply use the name of that product or service as the URL for that item. But the item will be housed under my website, http://www.lauriebornstein.com

For those of you wondering if I lost business when I changed business names, the answer is no. You can redefine who you are and what you do without suffering a loss in business at the same time.

Don’t waste time worrying about your business name, it’s OK to start your business with your name. In time, you may find that you want to incorporate a new business name or, like me, you may find that using your name is perfect! The important thing is to just get started. Success comes from engagement, and engagement means implementation. Just do it!

(I’m working on building my new site right now and plan to launch it in April. Keep an eye out for the announcement!)
